CASA of Imperial County hosted a private event this past week called “Christmas in July”—a celebration and empowerment workshop designed exclusively for teenage girls in the foster care system. Held at Firestorm Gymnastics in El Centro, the event provided an uplifting, judgment-free space where youth could explore art, movement, mentorship, and life skills essential to their emotional and physical well-being.

The day featured creative activities, gymnastics sessions, and a life-affirming presentation by Felicia Carter, Certified Life Coach and Founder of Making Life Happen. Youth also enjoyed charcuterie-style boxed lunches while engaging in meaningful conversations led by female CASA volunteers, who serve as consistent, trusted adult mentors to girls navigating life in the foster care system.

“This event reflects the power of prevention through connection,” said Alex Cardenas, Executive Director of CASA of Imperial County. “By creating safe, supportive spaces for foster youth—especially our young women—we are directly contributing to Imperial County’s ongoing success in keeping zero girls in our juvenile detention center. Programs like this work because they build trust, confidence, and community.”

Felicia Carter’s presentation focused on real-life tools for thriving, covering topics like communication, public speaking, setting boundaries, bodily autonomy, nutrition, and self-respect.

“These girls are facing pressures most people can’t imagine,” said Felicia Carter, Life Coach and Guest Speaker. “They need more than encouragement—they need strategies, space, and strong women beside them. I’m honored to be part of that support system.”

The event was hosted at Firestorm Gymnastics, whose welcoming environment helped create a space of both play and empowerment.

Events like Christmas in July reflect CASA of Imperial County’s continued investment in proactive, trauma-informed programs that empower youth, reduce risk factors, and help young people develop lasting networks of trust and guidance.
