This weekend kicked off the first of two summer celebrations hosted by CASA of Imperial County, with a special pool party held today, August 17, for local foster children and youth. The second event—a Volunteer Appreciation Pool Party—will take place next Saturday, August 24, honoring the dedicated CASA volunteers who serve as consistent advocates for children navigating the foster care system.

Both events are sponsored by the Rotary Club, whose members voted unanimously to support the initiative as part of their mission of “Service Above Self.” The decision ensured that the events did not draw from CASA’s Sunshine Fund, a restricted account reserved for enrichment activities for foster youth.

“Today was a chance for our kids to just be kids,” said Alex Cardenas, Executive Director of CASA of Imperial County. “Thanks to the Rotary Club’s generosity, we created joyful memories, safe spaces, and moments of connection that these children truly deserve.”

The children’s event featured water games, food, music, and plenty of fun in the sun, giving foster youth a much-needed break from the challenges they face throughout the year.

Next Saturday’s Volunteer Appreciation Pool Party will celebrate the more than 60 CASA advocates who serve foster children across Imperial County with dedication and compassion.

“Being a CASA volunteer is both emotionally rewarding and emotionally demanding,” said Marcie Landeros, a CASA. “This celebration reminds us that we are not alone in this work—and that every effort, big or small, is noticed and appreciated.”

The events were made possible through a unanimous vote by the Rotary Club’s general membership and executive board, reflecting the club’s ongoing commitment to youth, family, and community impact.

“Rotary’s mission is rooted in truth, fairness, goodwill, and building stronger communities,” said Pat Thompson, longtime Rotarian. “Supporting CASA just made sense. It’s exactly the kind of service we’re proud to stand behind."
